For 39 weekdays we stood outside OpenAI in San Francisco, asking Sam Altman to call for an AI Treaty. He asked the US government for international coordination, so the SF occupation is paused. New York continues, every weekday, until the words become action.
At first, we started occupying Anthropic and Google DeepMind on two continents, asking their CEOs to take the first step and urge for an AI Treaty. But after the recent news of an OpenAI model committing multiple felonies, we moved on to Occupy OpenAI.
Our demand was that they ask. We believe they did: over the weekend, Sam Altman and Dario Amodei called on the US Government to take the first steps towards international coordination on pacing the frontier. Altman now says that “where we will need the help of our government is for international coordination.” Amodei is on CBS talking about oversight by “the right combination of democratically-elected governments.” That is why we are pausing the occupation of OpenAI in San Francisco, after 39 straight weekdays outside 550 Terry A Francois Blvd.
But the government has yet to take a single step towards it, and these companies do not need anyone's permission to slow down. So the fight continues. Occupy OpenAI in New York City carries on every weekday at 295 Lafayette St, led by Matthew Tromp, until a complete and immediate freeze of frontier AI development.
